The Background
Since opening its doors in 2008, the John Zay Guest House has been more than
a place for patients and their families to sleep or wait for their next oncologist
appointment. Named after John Zay, a former Chaplain and cancer survivor,
who comforted and inspired myriads of people, especially those faced with
catastrophic illness, the John Zay Guest House is a home away from home for
outpatients and their families while receiving treatment at Penrose Hospital or
Penrose Cancer Center. Many of the guests have very limited financial resources,
so the home offers them the opportunity to remain together during treatment
while eliminating additional financial burden.
Not only is the Guest House almost always full, it now has a continual waiting
list of at least 7–10 parties. At times there have been as many as 20 parties

waiting for a room – more than enough to fill an entire second house. And, as
the hospital’s reputation for excellence in oncology and cardiovascular services

grows, we anticipate this need to only increase.

The John Zay Guest House expansion is a true testament to community spirit
and what is possible when people come together. When it became clear that the
guest house had to continually turn away as many (if not more) guests than it

could accept each night, the Penrose-St. Francis Foundation pledged to raise
$1.5 million dollars in donations for the expansion. The local home building
industry rallied together, with the involvement of HBA Cares, to complete the
project, with many of the original project team members contributing, joined by
numerous new partners from throughout the region. Together, home building
industry partners contributed over $1 million dollars of in-kind donations of time,
labor and materials.
Since the hospital and guest house are in an existing historic district, the need to
be a good neighbor was important. The Architect and HBA Cares worked closely
with the Old North End Neighborhood Association for a year to come up with a
design that met the needs of the JZGH, and the concerns of the community.
The new John Zay Guest House opens in October, almost exactly 9 years since
the opening of the original house. The expansion has added 11 mini-suites,
making between 3,600 and 4,000 additional nights of lodging per year available for
patients and their families.
